Today at the YWCA of Calgary downtown location, the Government of Alberta announced additional funding for arts and non-profit organizations impacted by the Alberta floods.

Speaking in a portion of the YWCA’s former fitness facility damaged by flooding, Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture, said $4 million will be made available for non-profit/voluntary sector organizations to assist in their rebuilding efforts.

“We know last year’s floods were so devastating for Albertans in the affected areas, and we know it still is for those affected,” Klimchuk said.

“The devastation not only affected the physical spaces that you work in, like this space at the YWCA, but it also dealt a psychological blow. Many of you here represent non-profit and voluntary agencies. You’re all used to stepping up to a crisis, it’s what you do every day. Along comes a crisis you know will create need, and you turn out to be victims of it as well. You went from being helpers to those needing help at the worst possible time.”

The YWCA was deeply impacted by the Alberta floods, which forced the evacuation of the YWCA Sheriff King Home emergency shelter and YWCA Mary Dover House supportive housing program, and temporary closure of several revenue-generating programs. In the aftermath of the Alberta floods, the YWCA had to make the difficult decision to permanently close YWCA Fitness on 5th, a major revenue generator for the organization.

Klimchuk said the special funding is intended for needs not covered by insurance or the Disaster Recovery Program.

“This funding will assist in physical rebuilding where necessary and it will also allow organizations to continue to provide invaluable services to Albertans in need,” Klimchuk said.

An additional $229,000 is being provided to arts organizations.
