Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey deliver keynote address at YW Calgary’s YWHISPER Gala in wake of Harvey Weinstein guilty verdict

March 4, 2020 – Calgary, AB – A sold out audience of more than 1,000 Calgarians will gather at the TELUS Convention Centre this evening to hear Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalists, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey at the 9th annual YWHISPER Fundraising Gala. For nine years, YWHISPER Gala has been a platform to speak up and speak out for women, particularly those who are vulnerable.

Kantor and Twohey played an instrumental role in uncovering the Weinstein sexual harassment story and brought the stories of countless women to light, igniting the #MeToo movement around the world. Last week, Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape and sexual assault. This conviction is a turning point for women seeking justice and validates their stories, moving #MeToo beyond She Said in a court of law.

Calgary continues to rank as one of the worst cities in Canada to be a woman when it comes to the pay gap, jobs and safety. YWHISPER Gala helps amplify the powerful voices of women and men to break the silence and stop behaviours that demean women.

“We all have a role in speaking up and making changes in our workplaces, homes and communities that help empower women, remove barriers and provide opportunities for them to succeed,” says Sue Tomney, CEO, YW Calgary. “This responsibly feels particularly powerful this year as we listen to Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey following the conviction of Harvey Weinstein. Indeed, their story is even more relevant today and provides context for moving forward in a community that enables women to thrive.”

YWHISPER Gala guests will hear the timely story about the power of truth and tenacious investigative reporting that catalyzed a global movement, driving women and men around the world to speak out against sexual harassment and assault.

Funds raised at this year’s YWHISPER Gala stay right here in Calgary, enabling programs and services that support women and their families to build safe and bright futures.
