From Growth to Strategy: Tax Planning for an Evolving Corporation
Learn tax strategies for growing corporations: retained earnings, owner compensation, shareholders, succession and future growth.
As your business grows and begins accumulating retained earnings, the financial and tax decisions facing you also become more complex. What worked when you first incorporated may no longer be the most effective strategy as your corporation builds wealth, adds key people, and evolves toward its next stage.
In this practical session, we will explore tax strategies for established and growing incorporated businesses and discuss how business owners can begin thinking beyond annual tax compliance toward longer-term corporate planning.
Topics will include:
- Managing retained earnings: What happens as profits accumulate inside your corporation, and what tax-planning opportunities should business owners start considering?
- Compensating yourself: As your corporation becomes more profitable, should you pay yourself through salary, dividends, management bonuses, or a combination of strategies? We will discuss the tax and practical considerations behind each option.
- Bringing in a key employee as a shareholder: When a valued employee becomes integral to the business, how can you compensate and retain them through ownership? We will introduce strategies involving share issuances, corporate reorganizations, and tax-deferred rollovers.
- Adding new shareholders: What should you consider when introducing a family member, key employee, business partner, or arm’s-length investor into an existing corporation?
- Planning for the next stage: As the value of your company increases, we will discuss why share structure, ownership, compensation, succession planning, and future exit considerations become increasingly important.
The goal of this session is to help business owners recognize when their corporation has moved beyond the start-up stage and understand the tax-planning conversations they should be having as their business, wealth, and ownership structure evolve.
Ideal for: Incorporated business owners who are generating consistent profits, accumulating retained earnings, considering adding shareholders or key employees, or simply wondering, “My corporation is growing—what should I be thinking about next?”
