Join YW Calgary for a free, virtual panel discussion in acknowledgement of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. This event will highlight the work of three local activists who have each taken unique approaches to address and prevent gender-based violence.

Dr. Tina GuoPsychiatry Residents & Founder of the University of Calgary Students Against Domestic Abuse Association

Dr. Tina Guo a is a passionate clinician, researcher and activist. She founded the Students Against Domestic Abuse Association (SADAA) at the University of Calgary to advocate for survivors of domestic abuse and dating violence, disproportionately represented by women. She led the SADAA’s annual conferences to educate students and faculty of the complexities and misconceptions around domestic abuse and dating violence, and held fundraisers to support local women’s organizations, including the YW Calgary. Currently, she is a psychiatry resident through the University of Toronto and is continuing her advocacy work in the medical field.

Crystal Many Fingers – Learning Design Consultant , Bow Valley College

Crystal is a Blackfoot member of the Kainai First Nation of Treaty 7. She is an award winning educator, TEDx speaker, and author who uses her creative talent to research and design Indigenous Ways of knowing and learning pedagogies. She focuses on Indigenizing and decolonizing curriculum through her work with Bow Valley College. She has additionally published a children’s book written in Blackfoot and English, A’pistotooki kii Ihkitsik Kaawa’pomaahkaa (Creator and the Seven Animals, why are we here?), which is included in the Calgary Public Library’s permanent collection. Her endeavors have been continually motivated by the desire to build bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, so there can be healthy relationships between both cultures.

Chelsea Humphrey – Registered Social Worker

Chelsea is a passionate activist who has advocated against sexual and gender based violence for the past decade. She understands these issues from an intersectional lens, informed by her perspective as a Queer woman who has experienced sexual violence. In 2013, she organized the Calgary chapter of One Billion Rising, an international event creating awareness about violence against women. Chelsea has worked as a sexual violence educator, a sexual violence support worker on the Calgary Sexual Assault Response Team, and as a counsellor working with youth with complex mental health needs, Trans and gender diverse folx, people living with HIV, and people who have experienced sexual violence. Chelsea is a registered social worker, currently practicing as a clinical counselor with children and families. She specializes in trauma informed care.

Each guest has had a profound influence as an activist. Hear their stories and what inspired them to create change in their community, and want they encourage other Calgarians to do in addressing gender-based violence.
