A Message from our Board Chair

It is with mixed emotions that I wrap up my final year on the Board of Directors of YW Calgary, as Board Chair for the last two years. While I am a little sad that my time on the YW Board has come to an end, I am so grateful for the amazing people I have had the privilege of working with and I have immense pride in the exceptional work of the organization.

As I reflect on the past five years, I recall so many bright points that continue to inspire me, provide me with joy and demonstrate the immense value YW brings to the entire community.

Included in this is the many supporters and partners who not only make the work possible but have leaned into the important public conversations facilitated by YW in 2021: International Day of the Girl, Family Violence Prevention month, and International Women’s Day – just to name a few. While we remained virtual this past year, that didn’t stop us from shining a light on critical, and sometimes difficult topics.

As a professional in the construction industry, I remain impressed by the commitment of the Board and the organization to ensure the YW Sheriff King Home Site Redevelopment Project continues to move forward, all while keeping the doors open on this vital service at its temporary location. The decision to rebuild a larger, trauma-informed crisis shelter as well as a new affordable housing building for women and their children fleeing domestic violence is both visionary and bold – two attributes this organization continues to embody.

YW has themed this past year as one of clarity. This really came home when the Board was invited to actively participate in – and ultimately approve – a refinement of YW Calgary’s mission and vision.

Following the activation this past year of the new Strategic Plan, as well as considerable consultation with, and input from, employees and leaders across the organization, this refresh demonstrates YW’s commitment moving forward. It was a pride point for me to see the Board dig in and leverage the past year of clarity to help finalize, and ultimately, approve our new Mission and Vision on March 31, 2022:

Mission

Prevention, intervention, empowerment, and leadership for the benefit of women and their families.

Vision

Women and their families thriving in a safe and equitable community.

This is who we are. This is the clarity of purpose and focused vision that makes YW Calgary such an important resource for women and their families.

As proud as I am to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments, I am equally excited for all that the future will bring. The focus of the 2021-25 strategic plan has and will continue to create many opportunities to support community in new and exciting ways.

The year ahead is filled with exciting possibilities for YW. With our staff expertise and community leadership in place, YW impacts those who walk through their doors as well as those who interact with them. Our impact grows exponentially.

In closing, I want to say that I will treasure every moment I have shared with the YW Calgary Board, the Leadership team, and the employees. I am filled with appreciation for my colleagues on this Board.

Thank you for allowing me to take on this important work with you, to learn from you, and to share what I have with you. You really are second to none, and it has been an honour to work alongside you.

The future is bright for YW, thanks to those who continue to support, govern, advocate for, and advance the work of the organization.
