Project Description

1897

Sarah Stuttaford took care of vulnerable women.
Shortly after the turn of the century, when Sarah, a widow, was more than 60 years old, she came to work as the matron of the women’s jail in Fort Calgary.
In Sarah, the inmates of the overcrowded facility, the only jail for women in Alberta, found a compassionate and engaged caretaker, who spent time with them and treated them with courtesy and respect, and to whom they responded in kind.
