Sal Howell, the restauranteur behind such iconic Calgary establishments as River Café and Boxwood café, has been at the forefront of the City’s culinary scene for more than a quarter century, weathering floods, changing tastes and epochal economic downturns. Connecting to Calgary’s history – her latest restaurant, Deane House, is in one of Calgary’s oldest buildings – and terroir – she began seeking out and promoting local producers long ago – Sal has been a champion for foodies seeking world-class cuisine and for women breaking into the business today.
