Project Description

2007

Sable Sweetgrass knows about the importance of culture.
A member of the Kainai Nation of Southern Alberta, Sable is an artist, writer, filmmaker and educator devoted to exploring and teaching others about her Blackfoot culture.
Her writing tackles important issues – the legacy of residential schools, colonialism, and the loss and recovery of traditional ways – against the background of family life.
Identifying herself as a transgendered woman and awowaakii – a Blackfoot term that can be translated as two-spirited – Sable is an important voice and advocate within Calgary’s LGBTQ community.
