Project Description

1987

The first female member of a visible minority to anchor a news broadcast in Calgary, Nirmala Naidoo championed diversity and gave voice to newcomers and those in crisis.
When Nirmala ran for public office as the Liberal candidate in a Calgary riding during the 2015 federal election, she continued her advocacy, fighting for Muslim women’s right to wear the niqab.
In 2016, Nirmala spoke out about gender inequality in politics in the wake of bullying and subsequent resignation of female leadership candidates in the Alberta PC party.
