Project Description

A practicing psychologist, Maria Eriksen was a forceful campaigner for women’s equality and helped to found the Calgary Birth Control Association (later the Calgary Sexual Health Centre), the Famous Five Foundation, the Calgary and Alberta Status of Women Action Committees, and the Alberta Legal Education and Action Fund.
Maria also founded and was president of the Immigrant Access Fund, which provided small loans to immigrant women – professionals in their home countries – so they could gain Canadian credentials to work in their chosen fields.
