Jessie Marie Chapman knew the value of a smile and a helping hand for visitors.
Born and raised in London, England, Jessie – or “Chappie” as she was known –immigrated to Canada and moved to Calgary in 1929 when she was nearly 50 years old.
Chappie threw herself into her new hometown, volunteering at the YWCA’s Traveler’s Aid booth in the Canadian Pacific station in downtown Calgary, where she became a longtime fixture, welcoming and assisting visitors until well into her 80s.
