Gertrude Laing was a culture builder.
Born in England in 1905, raised in Canada and completing graduate studies in French at the Sorbonne in France, Gertrude was perfectly positioned to help Canada come of age.
She served as the only female member of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism through the 60s and early 70s, sat on the Canadian Radio-Television Commission, Chaired the Canada Council and was one of the nation’s delegates to the UNESCO General Assembly.
