Gertrude Barrett O’Keefe was a hands-on leader when it came to the health and welfare of Calgarians.
A registered nurse, Gertrude focused on community service, sitting on the Calgary Hospital Board including a stint as board chair. In 1940, she joined the Red Cross, serving as the volunteer organizer and supervisor throughout WWII & for the next 22 years.
In December 1950, she worked through the night alongside first responders to rescue flood victims when the Bow River overtopped its banks.
