Project Description

Ethel Heydon was a pioneer of the pen.
In the early 1900s, when journalism was a male-dominated profession, Ethel, under the pen-name “Alberta West” served as the women’s editor, a general reporter and the City Hall reporter for The Albertan.
A feminist and advocate for women’s suffrage, she was a founding member of the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Women’s Press Club and lays likely claim to being the first female reporter in Calgary to garner a front-page newspaper byline.
