Project Description

1927

Betty Mitchell is the wellspring of professional theatre in Calgary.
Around 1935 she became one of the province’s first high-school Drama teachers, and in 1942 she was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to pursue graduate studies in Drama after a visiting theatre professor was impressed by her students’ production of Our Town.
Over the years she established many local theatre groups. Following her studies she returned to Calgary in 1944 and helped to found Workshop 14, the forerunner of both Theatre Calgary and Workshop Theatre.
