Project Description

1967

Barbara Leighton was an artist and an inspiration.
Following the death of her husband, Barbara, in her mid-fifties at the time, enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
Already an accomplished printmaker, she earned a diploma in fiber and metal crafts.
In 1970 Barbara converted an abandoned 1-room schoolhouse on her land near Millarville into an art studio. Four years later she officially opened the Leighton Centre, a gathering place and source of inspiration for generations of artists ever since.
