YW CALGARY LAUNCHES PUBLIC CAMPAIGN WITH 2/3 FUNDS SECURED

CALGARY, May 22, 2018 – YWCA Calgary proudly gathers with visionary community donors and supporters to celebrate the launch of our Transformation Campaign, YW She Matters. YW’s Transformation Campaign is more than two-thirds of the way to the goal of $60 million dollars to fund the construction of a new Hub facility and renovate YW Sheriff King Home.

“Today, in the beautiful and welcoming community of Inglewood, we launch a campaign that will transform how we support vulnerable women and propel YW Calgary on a sustainable path,” says Sue Tomney, Chief Executive Officer, YW Calgary. “We stand alongside our neighbours, business and community leaders who say, as we do: She Matters!”

From our roots offering safe shelter to women since 1910, YW Calgary has evolved to meet changing needs of women and community. The Transformation Campaign is the next step in this evolution, a project rooted in expertise that comes from supporting vulnerable women when and where they needed us for the past 107 years.

“This project intersects with two of our vital priorities: community connections and poverty reduction,” says Eva Friesen, President and CEO, Calgary Foundation. “Imbedded in the Inglewood community, the YW Hub facility will be a bridge for vulnerable women and their families to gain a sense of belonging and a safe sanctuary as they transition from violence, unemployment and poverty to stability and independence.”

Calgary Foundation’s gift, along with previous catalyst donations to the campaign, demonstrates the growing recognition of the need for infrastructure and programs to support vulnerable women. YW’s Transformation Campaign is about more than a construction project; it will propel YW Calgary to sustainability, ensuring uninterrupted access to programs and services necessary for women to thrive.

The YW Hub facility will offer accessible supports for women and their families including transitional housing, counselling, language and employment skills training, childcare spaces and parenting programming as well as support services to manage the organization. This beacon for the community will offer a fitness centre, multipurpose rooms and a community kitchen to engage with our neighbours in new and exciting ways.
