Meet our Executive Team
As Chief Executive Officer of YW Calgary, Sue Tomney is responsible for the strategic leadership of more than 300 diverse team members who offer shelter, housing, counselling and education programs to some of the most vulnerable women and families in the Calgary community. A proven leader and strategic thinker Ms. Tomney, along with her team, supports and advocates for healthy relationships, equity for women and a safe community where women thrive.
Ms. Tomney has held senior-level positions with both non-profits and corporations prior to joining YW in December 2010; VP, Marketing and Communications for Imagine Canada; Director of Communications and External Affairs at TransAlta Corporation; and Manager, Public Relations & Community Investment for Canadian Airlines International.
Currently, Ms. Tomney is the chair of the board for CanadaHelps, a member of the Premier’s Advisory Committee on the Economy and a member of the Calgary Council on Homelessness. Recent voluntary sector experiences include serving on the Joint Table on Awareness for the Government of Canada’s Voluntary Sector Initiative; board member for Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations; cabinet member for Calgary’s United Way Campaign; governor for Education Matters – Calgary’s Public Education Trust; and executive committee member of the 2008 Governor General’s Leadership Conference.
As the Chief Financial Officer for YW Calgary, Anna oversees the Finance and Contract Management as well at the Information, Technology and Facilities areas of the organization.
Anna has a history of leading the financial services, information technology and corporate services functions for organizations. Prior to joining YW, Anna held the role of Chief Financial Officer for a number of mid-sized organizations in the commercial and residential construction industry.
Anna has held executive board roles with the Distress Centre since 2008. She was the Chair of the Board of Directors from 2012-2014, completing her term as Past Chair in early 2015. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Saskatchewan, is a Chartered Accountant and an alumnus of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta’s CFO Leadership Program.
Jan Damery is the Vice President of Fund Development for YW Calgary. Jan is accountable for raising the funds and resources required to support the day to day operations and future sustainability of the organization.
In her role, Jan draws upon her diverse understanding and wealth of experience across sectors and cultures on the ways of empowering people and organizations to align and achieve their individual and collective goals. Jan has worked in parts of North America, South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East over the course of her career. Prior to joining the YW, she was a skilled facilitator and executive coach with The Refinery Leadership Partners Inc. for four years. From 2007-2012, she was the Director of Development in Canada with The Aga Khan University (AKU), an international university based in the developing world with main campuses in Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Prior to joining AKU, she was the Senior Director of Campaign and Resource Development with the United Way of Calgary and Area between 2001 and 2006.
Jan holds a M.A. in Economics from the University of British Columbia, and a B.A. with Honors in Economics from the University of Alberta. Jan is certified to administer several leadership assessment tools.
Jan is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Calgary. She is also past President of the Board of Directors of Calgary based Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. She currently sits on the World Bank’s Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Global Database Steering Committee.
Elsbeth Mehrer is the Vice President of Engagement and People for YW Calgary. Elsbeth is accountable for communications, government and community relations and resource development.
As part of an organization which has embraced the critical role of social service agencies to serve and advocate, a core focus of Elsbeth’s work is building relationships with government and agency partners to identify, address and ultimately solve issues that affect vulnerable women in the community.
Prior to joining YW, Elsbeth was the Director of Research, Workforce and Strategy (RWS) at Calgary Economic Development, where she provided the Calgary business community with current and reliable business and workforce development research and policy alternatives. Prior to CED, Elsbeth worked as an engagement manager for Critical Mass in Calgary and had a five-year career as a newspaper reporter in British Columbia. Elsbeth is a graduate, with honours, of SAIT Polytechnic’s Journalism program.
Heather Morley is the Vice President of Programs and Services for YW Calgary. Heather is responsible for providing leadership and direction to all YWCA programs and services that support vulnerable women and their families.
Heather brings more than 23 years of progressive experience in the human services sector and has worked for numerous community-based and government organizations across Canada and in the United States in frontline, clinical and leadership capacities. The focus of her work has always been women and children in crisis. Prior to joining YW, Heather was the Vice President of Development and Community Relations for Western Canada with the Canadian Women’s Foundation. Prior to that role, Heather was the Director of Programs with Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society. Heather holds a M.A. degree with a specialization in marriage and family therapy from the University of San Francisco.
